"I used to think I was the strangest person in the world but then I thought there are so many people in the world, there must be someone just like me who feels bizarre and flawed in the same ways I do. I would imagine her, and imagine that she must be out there thinking of me too. Well, I hope that if you are out there and read this and know that, yes, it's true I'm here, and I'm just as strange as you."

My obsession with Frida Kahlo began sophomore year in high school. During a session of Advanced Placement Capstone Seminar, my teacher gushed over the genius Kahlo exhibited as we were discussing one of her pieces as a source material for our final exam. At the time, I didn't think much of it. Sure, I heard of her, but I wasn't informed enough to be as engaged in the subject as my teacher was. However, I gradually became interested as my teacher informed the class that Kahlo was her favorite artist. Because of her enthusiasm, I decided to find out more about her. By the end of junior high, I declared Kahlo to be my soulmate and main inspiration. In fact, she is the reason this personal blog exists.

In case you aren't completely familiar, Frida Kahlo (Magdalena Carmen Frida Kahlo y Calderón) was a Mexican Painter, and well known as a feminist and lg(b)tq+ activist. Often breaking the negative stereotypes as a woman, Kahlo was an eccentric soul. Her beliefs about self acceptance (with gender, style, disabilities, etc), westernization, and achieving greatness despite multitudinous boundaries heavily related to my own life. Her talent and inner as well as outer beauty has established her as a role model to me.

"In this close-up from a family portrait, a young Frida experiments with androgynous style, flouting traditional norms by donning a gentleman’s suit and slicking back her hair. Frida the rebel." |https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=images&cd=&ved=0ahUKEwiX7K3V5crUAhXHCD4KHZJKAoQQjhwIBQ&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.messynessychic.com%2F2013%2F01%2F08%2Ffrida-kahlos-wardrobe-unlocked-and-on-display-after-nearly-60-years%2F&psig=AFQjCNFYf_iBPsFsAjX8w4ODDVPEUn_tRg&ust=1497992103928390

“I paint my own reality. The only thing I know is that I paint because I need to, and I paint whatever passes through my head without any other consideration.”

Kahlo fascinated me immensely. So I decided to work on a self assigned project. I created an aesthetic themed presentation, detailing the her life, analyzing a few of her pieces, praising her support for the lgbtq+ community, displaying some of her quotes...basically appreciating the fact that she existed. As I was near finishing the project, I realized that I wanted to share my love for Kahlo, and other things in general with others. Although I have used Instagram, Tumblr, and Pinterest before, I figured nothing would meet my formatting and aesthetic needs more than creating a website of my own, giving me the freedom to reach out and communicate others in my own way.

And here you are. The rest is history.

As for Kahlo, I will be I promise to create a blog just for her. It might take a while. But I assure you, I won't forget my queen.
